Niutao Elders Reflect on their DIGIFALE Journey

And just like that, we have completed our first DIGIFALE cohort for 2024, and it’s a special milestone – our very first Tuvaluan cohort. What a privilege it has been to witness the Auckland Niutao community journey through the 5-week DIGIFALE programme.

On May 31st, 2024, we had the honour of attending the DIGIFALE graduation ceremony for the Niutao community. It was an evening filled with laughter, meaningful conversations, and celebrations – not to mention some delicious Niutao food!

We also had the chance to hear directly from the elders about their experiences as DIGIFALE participants and navigating the online world. For many of the Niutao elders, this was not their first time owning a mobile phone. They shared how they would often give their phones to their tamaliki (children) or mokopuna (grandchildren) in the past; however, after going through the DIGIFALE programme, they have now learned valuable new mobile skills and truly understand the purpose and importance of owning and using a digital device. Some participants even went the extra mile to get their own phone cases – a testament to their newfound enthusiasm using a digital device!

It is always special hearing elders sharing the reflections and experiences from the DIGIFALE programme. Every participant has a unique story, but it is evident as a cohort the positive impacts DIGIFALE has made on their health and wellbeing. Congratulations once again Niutao elders!

We extend a heartfelt thank you to Niutao community leader Kelesoma Saloa for the opportunity, lead navigator Avafoa Irata for his selfless leadership, and navigators Tongatau Ikapoti, and Melelusi Tepapauoatua for their guidance, patience, and willingness to support the elders in their community.

From our DIGIFALE and Moana Connect team, a warm Fakafetai Lasi Auckland Niutao Community!
