Pasifika Wahine Toa making a difference in rural northland
As our DIGIFALE team journeyed through winding roads and stunning scenery, we arrived in the tight-knit community of Moerewa, a small rural town located approximately three hours drive from Auckland.
Moerewa is distinguished by its Māori heritage, traditional cultural practices, and a burgeoning Pacific community. Local residents and Pasifika DIGIFALE navigators, Mala Nosa-Brown, Siobhan Havilitama, and Maureen Havilitama call Moerewa home and are proud members of this local community.
Our DIGIFALE Moerewa family expressed their heartfelt thanks to DIGIFALE for bringing the program to support their community. Mala, the lead navigator and Social Services Manager for Kia Haanga Whakarereke shared, “People often overlook Moerewa when offering programmess and services such as DIGIFALE, but the reality is that there is a significant need here.”
Mala and the Kia Haanga Whakarereke team provide various community services with minimal funding but much collective passion. Given the need for additional services and program opportunities in Moerewa, they are now engaging a second cohort following the success of their first. DIGIFALE continues to make efforts to connect with our more rural and smaller Pacific communities across the motu. Moerewa is a powerful example of a small and thriving community. We look forward to seeing the seniors in Moerewa enhance their mobile literacy skills through the DIGIFALE programme and the support of their amazing navigators.
